is originally from Palestine. He received his Bachelors degree from Islamic University of Madinah in 1996 in Fiqh & Usool, graduating as the class valedictorian. After graduating, he went on to work as a youth counselor and relief program aide in war-torn Bosnia. Thereafter, he immigrated to the U.S. and currently resides in Dallas, Texas. He is also an instructor at AlMaghrib Institute, where he teaches popular seminars such as Fiqh of Love, The Code Evolved, and Heavenly Hues.

Detroit: Large-scale farming projects in the city

Morning in Downtown Detroit

There's talk about large-scale farming projects in Detroit, and I hope it's successful. I traveled to Detroit a couple of summers ago and it was so vacant I could do twenty cartwheels in the street without getting hit. The thing about that city, is that is has so much potential. It still has the bones of a city. It has a light rail system. There are a lot of great buildings there in need of renewal. My visit was short, so all I really saw was hot dogs and casinos, but the people? They were really fantastic and deserve a successful new start. It may take a long time for them to reinvigorate the place, but I hope it happens soon.

Ramadan/Eid Template on Google Docs

As salaamu alaikum, all,

Did you know that you can draw in Google Docs and save those drawings in common image formats such as, JPEG, PNG, GIF and SVG?

Loving to try new things, I worked up a super simple Ramadan/Eid Kit. It is freely available through Google Docs Templates.

The graphics are scalable free to use. Ad them to any documents used within Google Docs. I think they can be downloaded as well, but I'm not sure. The colors and text are customizable. I've also updated the by adding yellow starbursts. These starbursts are info bubbles and can be easily deleted.

Bell Peppers

So I'm at home. Nadia is testing out her new walking skills as usual. She picks up a book I just bought her from Barnes & Noble and walks around.

Since she's just 13 months old, she is really into everything. Every single thing she can get her hands on. Her tendency to explore her world often causes me to stop her and provide alternatives to the dangerous items and areas of play.

Back to the book...she's walking with her book, and heading for the refridgerator because it's open (she likes the fridge). Why? I was preparing something to eat or drink at the time. I can't remember which.

So as Nadia heads toward the refriderator, I almost instinctually stop her and redirect her, but this time I decided not to.

You see, Nadia didn't put her book down, she held it in her hand as though she were really into it. Usually, if she is attracted to one thing, she drops the other thing immediately. Not this time. So what was she doing? She was matching the bell peppers in her book with the bell peppers in the fridge!

I thought that was so cool so I took a pic.

Getting Back to Blogging

After getting a job, getting laid-off, getting pregnant, and getting to know my new addition (above), I think I'm ready to get back in the blogging game.

The reality is that I've tried Facebook, but it falls short. I'll still be there, but my blog is where I would rather share my news, opinions, and communicate with others. So I'll be asking my little "punkin" to move over, because I'm getting back in the saddle.

Why Are Southerners So Fat?

Being from Atlanta, and having lived in Alabama and Miami, I already know the answer.

As a youth, I had to walk to buses and trains. I had to walk to the grocery store and during other errands. I lost a lot of weight by walking to my destinations, and carrying 5-15 lbs in each hand on the way home. When you're young, you can always find a friend to walk and talk with.

As an adult, it becomes harder. You're married with children, you've worked all day. Your family needs your attention at home. Plus it's too hot or too cold outside to do anything out there! So your waistline gets thicker and your arms get flabbier. Ask me how I know!

My plan is to use my Wii Fit. My birthday is coming up in a month or so, and I want to tighten things up.

I'll let you know what happens insha Allah.

Life in Marvelous Times...

New Girl in Town

Where have I been? Basking in the glow of history. Having a new baby, and stuff like that! Her name is Nadia. Masha Allah, she is a joy to have around.

During the inauguration Nadia was only 21 days old, so we watched history at home(pictured above). Perhaps we can go to the next inauguration when she turns 4 pending President Obama does a decent job running the country during this current term.

Brand New Day

I am in no hurry to move out of this historical moment. I've hardly settled into it yet. I am still wrapping my head around it. So no, I won't be rushing past this moment. I don't think this will hit me until I see President Obama on the White House steps.

Obama For the WIN!

I'm 30 yrs old. I am from the Hip Hop generation. I hail from Atlanta, a historic city for African Americans. I am from the deep south.

I've been called a "Nigger" to my face at young age. I've witnessed how my intelligent, college-educated husband has been treated by police versus White treatment. I have seen the disdain that Black people have for each other. I've met a Black person who couldn't pronounce "Africa", but was a school teacher in an old confederate state...

I've seen some crazy things, some sad things, some outrageous things. One thing I never thought I'd see is a Black president. Maybe I thought I might see one when I became really old and grey, but never while I was a young woman.

In a previous post, I laid out what an Obama presidency meant to me. I look at my 10 yr old son, and I become even more firm in my decision to vote for Barack Hussein Obama. I contemplate, that God-willing, my daughter will be born and a Minority as president will be normal to her.

But is it all about the kids? No. Selfishly it's all about me...and you...and them.

Me First: I'm only 30 y'all. I can be President. 2028 y'all!

You: "...this nation shall rise up, and live out the true meaning of it's creed." - MLK

Yes Nation. Yes You Did. You are composed of so many types of ppl from so many different walks of life. It is time you had a leader who relates to you, or is willing to find a common ground with you. Yes Nation. You freakin' rock. Now your job is to keep rocking. Be accountable and hold "them" accountable.

Them: The politicians need to know that they need to keep their promises, and that we will hold their feet to the fire. They need to know that nasty attacks is not how we like to roll. Lastly, they need know that there's nothing wrong with having intelligent people in their party (read: Joe the Socialism expert wannbe).


Okay, so that's it. I'm happy. I'm hopeful. I need to be pinched.
